Writer's picture: Chelsea DelaneyChelsea Delaney

If you’re serious about landing your dream nanny job, a strong portfolio isn’t just a nice touch—it’s essential. A well-crafted nanny portfolio sets you apart, showing families that you’re not just another applicant but a professional who takes their work seriously. Think of it as your highlight reel, giving families a clear picture of your experience, skills, and personality before they even meet you. The industry is shifting, and you must have an understanding of the trends when searching for your next role. In a highly competitive industry, standing out is key.

Whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned pro, this guide will walk you through exactly what to include in your portfolio, how to organize it, and how to make sure it gets noticed. Plus, I’m sharing free templates to help you put it all together effortlessly.

Why Every Nanny Needs a Portfolio?

A nanny portfolio isn’t just about looking good on paper—it’s about giving families confidence in their hiring decisions. It shows that you’re professional, prepared, and invested in your career. Parents want to know that they’re hiring someone reliable, experienced, and capable of handling their children’s needs. Your portfolio is your chance to prove that before you even walk into an interview. Beyond that, having a portfolio can help you negotiate better pay and benefits. When families see clear evidence of your experience, certifications, and glowing references, they’re more likely to offer a competitive rate.

What to Include in Your Nanny Portfolio?

Professional Cover Page

Your portfolio should start with a clean, polished cover page that includes your name, a professional photo, and a brief title like "Professional Nanny & Childcare Specialist." Keep it simple and to the point.

About Me Page

This is where you introduce yourself. Share a little about your background, why you became a nanny, and what you love about working with children. Make it personal but professional. Families want to get a sense of who you are beyond your resume.

Your Resume

Even if you’ve already submitted your resume with your application, adding it to your portfolio makes it easily accessible for families. Make sure to include your experience, education, certifications, and any specialized skills, such as newborn care or working with children with special needs. For the best presentation, use our provided template, detailing the ages of the children at the time of hire, the length of each position, the type of role, your responsibilities, and the family’s last name—ensuring it matches the reference listed.

Certifications & Training

If you’re CPR-certified, have taken first aid courses, or completed any child development training, include copies of your certifications. This reassures families that you’re qualified to handle emergencies and provide top-tier care. Make sure all of your training and certifications are accurate and up-to-date.

Letters of Recommendation

Strong references will make all the difference. Include letters from past employers or childcare-related mentors. If you don’t have formal letters, you can add a section with direct quotes from references along with their contact information. Ensure that your references are valid and from real families. Our agency conducts thorough reference checks, and we know if your references are falsified.

Sample Work Schedule or Daily Routine

Show parents what a typical day with you might look like. Outline a past schedule that includes meal prep, educational activities, outdoor play, and nap times. This helps families visualize what you bring to the table. Tailor the sample to the family vs providing a random sample. Ensure it is personalized to the role you're interviewing for.

Photos of Activities (With Permission)

A few well-chosen pictures of you engaging in activities like reading to a child, leading a craft, or playing outdoors can help bring your portfolio to life. Always get permission from parents before using any photos.

Educational Philosophy & Childcare Approach

Every nanny has a unique approach to childcare. Do you focus on Montessori methods? Do you believe in structured routines or free play? Sharing your philosophy helps families see if you’re a good fit for their parenting style. Explain in your portfolio your philosophies and how they pertain to the role you're applying to.

Emergency Contact Information & Background Check Confirmation

Some families feel more at ease knowing that you’ve already completed a background check or are open to one. You can include a note stating that you have a clear background check available upon request.

How to Present Your Portfolio.

Presentation matters. A professional-looking portfolio will make a strong first impression, so consider putting it in a sleek binder or creating a digital version. Many families appreciate a PDF version they can review before an interview, so having both a printed and digital copy is ideal. If you go the digital route, platforms like Canva or Google Docs make it easy to create a polished document. I’ve put together a free nanny portfolio template to help you get started—just download it, customize it, and make it your own.

Making Your Portfolio Work for You.

Your nanny portfolio isn’t something you create once and forget about. Update it regularly with new references, certifications, and experience. Bring a copy to every interview and, if possible, send the digital version to families before meeting them. A strong portfolio can set you apart in a competitive market, helping you land better jobs, negotiate higher pay, and build stronger relationships with families. Take the time to create something that truly represents you and your expertise—it’s an investment in your future as a professional nanny.
